Excellent podcast! I've never heard the word "lagom" but it's a perfect word. Technology is wonderful, but "just enough". Our modern world seems to have completely gone off the deep end with "too much".
Of course I'm a bit older than you two. I grew up without "technology". It was a big deal to shift from a black and white TV to a color TV! My father was one of the first computer programmers in the 1950s so I grew up "with" computers. My father wanted to raise a robot alongside my brother and I but the technology simply wasn't there. When I was out of college I bought an Apple II and my father absolutely marveled at it.
I love technology! But cell phones and so much of our modern world is just obnoxious! It's absurd that people can't navigate without GPS! People are having a very interesting reaction to "AI" (Simulated Intelligence). For me, it's a handy tool (essentially a super handy search engine). It doesn't have any "intelligence".
Certainly I understand the desire to go back to a simpler life. I moved away from the big city and I'm seeking a more "down to earth life" as I head into retirement. But I certainly won't be giving up technology. I'll continue loving my books, but also loving my computer.
You mentioned simpler devices like iPods. I've always believed that devices were better doing what they were designed to instead of trying to do everything! Who needs a toaster that talks to the Internet???
Thanks John! We're glad you enjoyed the show. It was a fun one to record. Although humans will always love tech due to evolutionary / survival advantages (similar to how we adopted the wheel, club, gun etc) I also believe that these tools were all to further a purpose of social cohesion and/or protection. Once humans realize that cell phones and some of the more obnoxious tech does neither, they'll flock to more reliable, stable, time-tested tools, like the good old fashioned pen, paper, and desktop!
It's hopeful to see young people crave the simplicity - how deeply ingrained the need for solace is in our psyche, maybe we are only starting to discover it now. I'm with you though, I love the tech, as long as it serves a purpose, dare I say "my" purpose!
Your father sounded like someone who truly appreciated the art of the technology, as he knew what went into making it. That's another aspect - these devices are so 'simple' to use that many don't question what is behind it, or how radiation works to power a signal, or what the 'cloud' really is...
Yes, "technology", whether it was the bow and arrow or cell phones, in theory advances humanity's survival. Some technologies are very disruptive. Some technologies are not "natural" and negatively impact our health.
We need to be wise about what technologies we utilize.
I consider myself fortunate to have been raised by parents with a good scientific and mathematical background (my father's degree was actually in physics). My degree was "Systems Science" (because Michigan State University didn't have a computer science degree at the time).
Working in hardware and software has given me a very general, wide view of technology and various aspects of it. Computers and the Internet have accelerated change for humanity. That has been both valuable and disruptive / unhealthy.
One of my great frustrations is the lack of foresight to build homes with ethernet wired in. Unfortunately most people take the lazy way out and use WiFi. 😢
Keep publishing MP3s for us to download. I love that!
I have a sign at my (locked) gate 'no smart meters; tech off!'. I guess the FBI qualifies me as an 'Anti Tech extremist'. We use to be called 'misfits' - or nerds. And I have paper calendars, and a dumb phone for text and calls only, and I avoid tech addicted people. Have to go, a green parrot is calling for a free feed.
Hi, Roman - wanted to check back, as I hadn't gotten any reply yet to the two emails I've sent you (know primary / initial one, is MASSIVE - just eliminating possibility of non-receipt.....thanks!)
I can TRY, Roman - Yahoo! Mail's been VERY obstinate about sending it.....will do so right NOW - look for Subject line that leads, with, 'For Your Informed Consideration' - unfortunately, AS noted was FORCED to reduce all 31 attachments to a 'ZIP file' - appreciate your opening it!

Thanks for listening!
Definitely a fun episode / show.

I love listening to the two of you. It says a lot that you laugh together. :) And I love that I'm hearing your real voices and not AI-generated.
I'm all in on staying low-tech. I have my own offline club of solitude in the woods. :)
That being said, I do occasionally still have an old-fashioned tea and yummy baked goods with a couple of friends.
I really can't handle being with people who are constantly checking their phones. I do give a pass to friends with children.
Keep up the good work, Bohdanna and Roman! XO
Thanks Barbara! Food always tastes better in good company, the secret ingredient....
Clubs of One are the ultimate 'secret society.'
Thanks for listening, and laughing with us (:
Clubs of One! I LOVE that :)
