That;s funny. I lived in Berkeley California for over a decade. I had a small yard, so I offered to do gardens at other people's places. I got three gardens in the neighborhood that way. The one up the street was a man who planned to sell his house. He offered to pay half of all the expenses (the only one who did that). I made beautiful gardens in all of the front yard and in the adjacent part of the back yard. He said he did that to help sell his house.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with a long distance move and letting go of items that no longer serve you. Going through this right now as a senior and it does not get any easier the longer you wait to start a new chapter of your life. Have the most difficulty with getting rid of books and hobby collections that I've bought but never had time to read/complete. You learn quickly how difficult they are to move but mentally it takes a toll. Just love Arizona and know you will too...

Hi Sue! Thanks for letting us know you enjoyed the conversation. We hear you on the books....they're probably the most difficult for us to get rid of, and honestly we still have a lot. However we've donated many cookbooks as cooking over the years we can do many recipes from scratch...but other how-to, and practical guides etc we still like holding onto. Then there are the older books that you can't find anywhere else, which we're saving as part of a future 'library' (: That said, we have already donated boxes. Whereabouts in AZ are you?

Hi Roman - Have only visited Sedona/Grand Canyon/Flagstaff/Phoenix in spring as heat is not my thing but it's everywhere this year. Moving from Virginia to Tennessee this fall due to retirement/downsizing.

Another enjoyable conversation! Relevant for me as I've spent most of the past... yikes.. I was going to say two years but it's now approaching three years... moving!

A few comments:

I love my books, but I did actually get rid of a *few* before moving them. Moving books is great exercise!!! {grin}

I bought a house built in 1900 so I left the "living room" without any modern appliances (no TV). I converted a bedroom into my "media room".

My wife passed away 17 years ago, I *still* have trouble giving away some of "her things". (a large amount is now up in my new attic).

As a photographer, everything I look at is potentially a prop that I could use in a photo. That makes a far too easy excuse for "keeping everything". There is one item (that I received as a Christmas gift) a couple years ago that I can't figure out where it got lost to in the move. {sigh} One effort I've done with this move is to type up "location lists" to inventory my home and make it easier to find things in the future!
