i'm thinking how I naturally like full spectrum and warm lights - and firelight from the wood-burning stove.

Thank you Elsa. I know, right? Letting the good type of light in is even easier than letting ourselves be exposed to the malevolent type. We were born to be addicted to the Sun! Do you have warm/ red lights at home?

Before regular bulbs were outlawed, I bought 4 boxes of 24. Not enough. Non-warm lights are a horror to me. I remember one I installed before I recognized what horrors they are. I hated having that light on. Finally I changed it. One warm light warms a whole room.

Thanks for sharing that Elsa. You were already thinking ahead of the curve, eh? It's amazing how even one candle, one light, can make a world of difference. Incandescents also emit infrared/ red, which truly does warm the home!

By the time incandescents were outlawed, I knew they were the only lights that felt right. Which explains the outlawing. I should have bought 10 times more!!!

We didn't buy enough either, but just scored a bunch more at a small thrift store, an estate sale, and a few at garage sales--they're still out there, so don't give up...most people can't believe we want them. We're preparing ourselves to go to candles and lanterns only if we have to.

Bought battery-powered digital alarm clocks at Walmart--chosen because I did not want the read-out light on all night long. Have to press a button on top to get read out--it stays on for a few seconds, then automatically shuts off.

Nice. Same here - the display shuts off unless I hit it. When did you buy the alarm clock? Recently?

First two about a year or two ago, then again (for two properties, so 4 in all) this year (and one just died). Sharp SPC500.

Thank you for sharing the model Via! Glad that you were able to grab them...I bet red light alarm clocks will be an antique and 10x their value a few years from now.

Seems like a lot to me. But I admire your dedication.

Hi, this is very interesting. I normally use the computer until 2130 or so when I go to bed.. I usually watch youtube videos.. Would you recommend using Blue Light Blocking Glasses? And if so, from what hour? Thanks very much for yet another indepth article :)

Expand full comment

Hi Johan, for sure! Yes I would use glasses that block 99-100% blue light from the time of Sunset, to the time you go to bed (ideally). If this is not possible, the next best thing would be to use those glasses at least 1-2 hours before bed. Does that help clarify?

There was a time when I was taking colder showers regularly but stopped. I forgot why though. I'll ease back into them for a bit. Thank you.

I hear you - there are definitely those days that I dread them, but I now need them in masochistic addictive kind of way.

Here are some more stats:

cold water immersion at 14°C increased metabolic rate by 350%, norepinephrine by 530%

Thx for another great article. Of course, you're preaching to the choir. :) Ayurveda knew all of this - well, long before the lightbulb was invented. Especially about our digestive fire being strongest around noon-ish. "No cold water around mealtime!" my Ayurveda teacher would say. It puts out our digestive fire. Of course, every American restaurant loves to deliver a giant glass of ice water to your table before your meal.

I don't even have any lights plugged in anymore. At night, if I need it, I light a few candles and maybe read a bit with a red-light headlamp. I just survived two weeks with family who turn on practically every light in the house DAY and NIGHT! :( Not to mention 14 people under one roof using their phones and leaving the WiFi on all night.) Also, there was sunscreen slathering and sunglasses galore. But, I love them and I survived. :)
