So, in a nutshell, "smart" meters can cause fire (even intentionally, while insurance company adjustors are not allowed to inspect them after a fire), harm health, and can be used for surveillance (alas, even home Wi-Fi can do that).
Since I opted out, the company has been charging me $15 a month. The meter reader told my wife that he was the only one left out of seven readers in our area. That's how "smart" people are.
So, the company is saving money on the readers, while the power consumption increases with the new meters (we couldn't opt out of the water meter, and our monthly charge is now $48, up from $36), but is unable to sell our data. Their "loss" is apparently less than $180 a year.
Another variable that remains unaccounted for is interference between various forms of radiation:
The "smart" water meter and the neighbors' electric meter and 5G-compatible Wi-Fi routers that turn the local grid into a giant antenna are also still around:
yeah, i know - death by a thousand cuts . . . unfortunately they have plausible deniability sewn up. my latest "fix" is plugging Stetzer dirty electricity filters into my outlets. really transformative. but i live in a relatively remote situation, no smartmeters or wireless devices nearby, so the DE filters only have to counter whatever comes in on the utility line, my own SMPS devices and/or whatever wiring issues the house might have.
Unfortunately, those filters have never been confirmed as helpful. Plus most of the damage comes through wireless.
Most places don't even have decent grounding, so even without the crap, stray currents would still harm health. Many people don't know that living within 150 yards from a high-voltage power line turns the average life expectancy to 10 years...
I have long suspected that smartmeters may be a major component of the recent upsurge of strange fires, both in CA, Maui and elsewhere. A series of massive fires ignited on Oct 9th 2017 in Sonoma County, northern California, destroying roughly 6,800 homes and buildings. After these fires, i ended up living several months in a ~ 150 acre gated community in the burn zone.
There were ~25 houses, mostly in small clusters of 3 or 4 dwellings. Only two homes survived the fire. Neither had a smart meter. The owner of one of the homes without a smartmeter told me she was almost certain all the other (burnt) houses had smartmeters. The unburned house i stayed in was covered in old redwood shingle and had a drum of very flammable deck stain sitting on the deck during the fire. It was ~50 feet from two other houses that burnt to the ground. Also, most of the trees on the 150 acres were not burnt at all or only partially burned.
On all the properties with destroyed homes the old electric smartmeter had been removed, and the utility had installed new "smart"meters on posts for each even though there were only 2 or 3 houses being rebuilt at that time.
great article Roman! turns out "smart"meters are a pretty dumb idea - except for those who sell our data and make money replacing meters every few years.
Here in central Alberta we unfortunately have 3 “smart meters” on our house. The electrical meter was changed years ago when nobody was home, a note was left in the mailbox to notify us of the so called upgrade. We called them to say we didn’t authorize the new meter but they stated that the meter was their property and they can upgrade/ maintain at their discretion. This was ten years ago now and we were not aware of the dangers of the meters at that point, but were quite concerned about false meter readings leading to increased billing. Which we did in fact experience. My wife took it as a personal mission and photographed the meter readings several times a day to compare with the billing statements. She won that billing battle, the full removal of the meter she did not win. The smart water meter was already installed when we purchased the house. I have tested the area around the meter in the basement and it sends out quite significant RF spikes about every minute. I have attempted to Faraday it and it does seem to eliminate the major spikes. Though unfortunately with all the wifi signal floating around the neighborhood, it seems like an exercise in futility. The gas meter was changed out about five years ago, installed when I was away for work. The installer fed my wife the convenience line of not having to open the gate for a meter reader. When she disagreed he said it was mandatory and if it wasn’t installed, then no gas for you! They rolled this all out under the guise of convenience ( just like the upcoming CBDC and digital ID), but it is nothing but another method of control with the added benefit for them to be able to remotely disconnect your utilities if you are a bad citizen or in a worst case scenario Maui your house or entire neighborhood.
Excellent article, thank you for all the information you both share!
so sorry. i used to think of canada as a gentler, kinder, more humane country (than the US). but that was a long time ago and either i was deluded or it has changed a lot.
i mean there is not even a possibility of opting out?
Same in BC! I went to the bcuc hearings to stop the smart electrical meters and during the hearings they lied through their teeth about all harmful aspects of their smart device. Hired lawyers to double down on their lies. No oversight bodies left in Canada that are not anti life, anti freedom.
I venture to say that the dangers with the meters, the push back, and the legal cases IS the purpose as the problem and reaction. The solution will be to put you "safely" into a smart city to protect you from these terrible smart meters and the terrible police.
Here in Japan they let you choose. I can confirm it's analog by using the make and model and calling the meter maker, and also by seeing the meter reader lady come by every month to download the data manually.
? ? Proton - if there is a way to download the data, then it is still an electronic meter. Analog meters are just read visually - you read the dials, which circle around like a clock - at least in the US.
But there is a difference between connecting to the towers and plugging a reader into the meter to get the data. My meter has no transmission part to it. So they say….
Outstanding collection of details!

I added a link to Roman's article to mine.
at least you can opt out. $15 is cheap health insurance.
I am being killed in a million other ways. :)
Two years ago, I nearly died, which inspired me to collect 13 variables that can kill and also converge to ensure plausible deniability:

Temporary solution: put a faraday cage around the meter to protect yourself,
and the utility company cant read the meter. They will have to read it the old
fashion way, and walk in your yard to read it.
wow, i want to send this entire article to our local public works dept,
they are forcing homes to install wifi "smart" water meters,
They dont care. and Public is clueless and doesnt care.
Helpful information. Thanks.
I don’t notice the poisoning. Is it because it’s a low dose? Is it because I’ve got a strong constitution?
We can’t even turn off our phones

Am in UK. EDF want to "upgrade". Will refuse. Maybe remove Implied Right of Access legally via Notice

yes, i agree..
