Another enjoyable episode! I'm still terrible at finding time to get outside in the sunlight. As an "indoor" person it's fine to intellectually understand the benefits of sunlight and yet still be frustrated by not getting much!

I'm sure natural sunlight is best, but I'm curious how red light therapy stacks up against actual sunlight. Too many variables!

John - re artificial red light - i have a big incandescent IFR (near infra-red) bulb near my computer. it's good at night (and during daytime inside in the winter or even summer if no windows are open - especially if on blue-lit screens - along with some incandescent bright "white" light in daytime and even a small UV "black light") - but it's nothing compared to natural sunlight. if you can find it, check out John Ott's book 'Health & Light'. transformative, fascinating reading. out of print, but can be found. also, neurosurgeon Jack Kruse has lots of great info on sunlight, red light etc - his lecture at Nourish Vermont 2016 is filled with information on light, tho Jack can be challenging to listen to at times. (around 20:44 minutes it begins about red light and our blue-lit world):

Jack Kruse did another Nourish Vermont lecture in 2017:

Thanks, I actually have a near infra red + red light bulb that I use for ambient light in the evening when I'm watching TV. (it's not shining directly on me, just providing ambient light) I like it but can't say it's doing any "miracles".

i am wondering why avoid UV on open wounds - it can be quite germicidal.

My guess would be the concern over excessive UV being damaging to the skin.

excellent, excellent! i love the way you guys give us the history too. such important info. normal people still knew the healing power of sunlight even back in the 1960s/70s, but certainly not the hospitals. (what could be worse than a hospital ward?). interesting that in the photo of the 3 doctors including Rollier, ALL are wearing glasses. i guess the importance of sunlight into the eyes was not yet known to Europeans. when i read John Ott's book "health and light" in 1979, i quit wearing my glasses most of the time - and my distance vision improved pretty dramatically over time. prior to that, every new prescription was stronger. even now, 47 yrs later, my distance vision prescription is much lower than back then, and i don't need reading glasses either.

Yes, I enjoy the history information too!

Excellent podcast! Thank you!

At the hospital I worked at we had a Solarium but unfortunately they stopped using it and it was empty most of the time except for doctor's meetings!

It is all very well talking up the benefits of sun and fresh air but how can you tell whether it has been laced with the likes of Aluminium?
