Why I love drinking red light.
After dusk, I turn into a vampire.
I stay away from bright blue light that destroys my body, and I start drinking red light.
Our home turns into a spa at night, as our lights turn from blue to amber red.
Our eyes thank us, and our hearts feel at ease.
Red light, specifically infrared, allows our bodies and mitochondria to regenerate.
When the rest of the world is like the city that never sleeps, it’s important to have our own place of refuge we can keep.
Day and night, cars and even bicycles stream down the streets with their LED headlights that blind us and disrupt our metabolism in the name of progress.
After a long day at work, many of us continue to have a hard day’s night by staring into a screen that offers our sleep no mercy as the 450nm wavelength of blue light damages our mitochondrial DNA link, and impairs our bodies’ regenerate at night by destroying our melatonin - link to study.
Children absorb more blue light
More importantly, young children under 10 years of age absorb 60% more blue light into their retina as the lens of their eyes is not yet fully developed - link to study
Blue light also spikes dopamine, which can lead to addiction.
What is happening to our children’s “energy efficiency”?
We turn to LEDs to do our part in increasing energy efficiency, while neglecting what “efficiency” is doing to our parts.
Our ancestors instinctively knew that rising and falling with the Sun and rhythms of nature was optimal for their minds and bodies.
They didn’t need think tanks, or peer-reviewed journals to tell them so.
They weren’t in awe of nature - they were nature.
If we want to live in the concrete jungle that has become our post-industrial factory of telecommuting kitchens and living rooms, we must embrace an ancestral mindset that is tethered to practical roots, not green dollar energy.
Otherwise we run the risk of turning into real vampires, who take energy from future generations because we ourselves can’t rely on our own energy to survive.
Instead of asking what kind of world we want to build, why don’t we let the power of the regenerative world build us?
