Ever wonder why we're instinctively drawn to stare into a campfire?
Red light, specifically infrared, actually improves our vision as we age, along with many other benefits.
A recent study published in Nature showed how single 3 min 670 nm exposures, at much lower energies than previously used, significantly improved vision in ageing populations (37–70 years) to levels associated with younger subjects!
Each morning as the Sun rises, our bodies absorb its light, even behind the clouds.
Though we may only see a tiny part of the light spectrum our bodies still sense and absorb infrared along with other spectra.
The wavelengths of infrared light power our mitochondria, which are the engines of our cells.
Compared to other colors on the light spectrum, near infrared at 620nm-680nm (wavelength in nanometers) penetrates more deeply into our tissues, called the “optical window” of our skin.
How we digest light
All of our bodies' metabolic processes are powered by what is known as the electron transport chain. If one step in the chain fails, we suffer.
The last step of the chain depends on the proper regulation of the cytochrome c oxidase enzyme.
This enzyme, which functions best in the infrared zone, ensures that our mitochondria are functioning at an optimal level.
Each step of our electron transport chain needs to complete, however the chain usually fails toward the end due cytochrome c oxidase not being able to do its job.
Many of us end up with metabolic syndrome as a result.
We can be in Olympic level shape, eat the best food, take expensive supplements, but if our electrical systems aren’t working, then our metabolism suffers.
If our bodies don’t have the correct light environment, the metabolic signals don’t get through, and the last step of the chain fails.
This is why you often won’t feel hungry if you’re outside and active on a sunny day. The light is doing the work for you.

Nutrition has more to do with physics than it does chemistry.
Each food substance and form of light energy we consume has (+) and (-) electrons, along with a photoelectric effect that acts not only a calorie by calorie scale, but on an electromagnetic, quantum level. This why EMFs directly affect our health: our metabolism is more physics than chemistry.
For a basic understanding of EMFs, feel free to check out my article here:
I know this all sounds intimidating, but to simplify the equation, I would argue it’s easiest to live how nature intended.
Rise with the Sun that gives us energy, and stay in the morning light as much as possible.
AM light contains more infrared and UV-A, versus the UV-B which can more easily burn us.
We’ve all been scared by ads for sunglasses that we need to wear them whenever we’re outside, otherwise we'll go blind!
Aren't the eyes a muscle that need to be worked, instead of being shoved in a dark closet where they atrophy?
Melanin, which gives our eyes their blue, hazel, green or brown color, already protects us from UV rays.
I haven’t worn sunglasses for over 10 years, and my eyesight has actually improved.
If the birds and animals aren’t going blind, why would I want to block the metabolic signal that nature intended?
If the eyes are our windows to the soul, why do we constantly smash the glass of our body's windows each morning, as we pick up our phones and look at the computer screen?
Could it be we're addicted? (I can hear the tantrums and denial now...the first step in recovery).
